Marie-Louise Eta to Lead Union Berlin in Historic Bundesliga Appointment

Bundesliga side FC Union Berlin have announced Marie-Louise Eta as interim head coach of the men’s team until the end of the season, marking a historic appointment in the league.

The milestone decision follows the club’s split with Steffen Baumgart after a 3–1 defeat to FC Heidenheim. Union had managed just two wins in fourteen matches since the winter break, amid a noticeable decline in performances.

Previously in charge of the U19s and set to become head coach of Union’s women’s first team, Eta takes on her new role with immediate effect, with the club now working to appoint a replacement for the U19 side.

“I am delighted that the club has entrusted me with this challenging task. One of Union’s strengths has always been, and remains, the ability to pull together in such situations. And, of course, I am convinced that we will secure the crucial points with the team”, she spoke after her appointment.

“Given the points gap in the lower half of the table, our place in the Bundesliga is not yet secure,” said Eta ahead of the final few games of the season.

Eta becomes the first woman to coach a men’s team in Germany’s top-flight league, the Bundesliga.

Currently sitting 11th on the table with 32 points, Union Berlin will next face Wolfsburg at home in a clash scheduled for next week.
