Setting an historic milestone, Alex Iwobi made his 300th appearance in the English Premier League (EPL) today as Fulham fell to a devastating 2-1 less to Newcastle United at St James’ Park.
Alex Iwobi has now become the first Nigerian player to reach that milestone as Fulham fell to a late goal from Bruno Guimarães, an encounter Iwobi believed they should have taken a point back to London.
Speaking post match on the narrow defeat, the Nigerian midfielder shared;
“Of course, we’re very disappointed,” Iwobi said. “We knew it was going to be a hard game and a tough place to come to, but if we don’t win then we shouldn’t lose, and maintain the draw.
“Unfortunately, a last minute winner is a dagger in the heart, but we have to pick ourselves up and go into next week’s game.”
On his 300th career appearance in the EPL;
“It’s amazing,” he said. “It’s a big achievement to lead that, with the likes of Shola Ameobi and even my uncle [Jay-Jay Okocha] that’s participated in the Premier League.
“It’s an honour, but I’m not done yet, I’m going to keep on going and hopefully keep the record going,” he ended.
Since joining Fulham from Everton, Iwobi has established himself as a key player for Marco Silva and he is now a mainstay at the heart of midfield for the Craven Cottagers.
On the international stage, he remains a key component of the Nigeria national team, having helped the Super Eagles secure a World Cup playoff berth which will take place next month in Morocco.
