Carlos Alcaraz has comepleted his career slam after defeating Novak Djokovic in the final of the Australian Open.
The 22 year old this becomes the youngest player in Open Era -22 years and 8 months- to complete the career slam.
He humbled the ten time champion 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 to lift his first ever Australian Open title, having won the other slams twice each.
Having never reached the final before at Melbourne, the Spaniard proved all doubters wrong by going all the way to lifting his first title.
Djokovic, despite losing what could have been a record extending 25th Grand Slam title in a record 38th final, had nothing but praise for the young champion.
“What you’ve been doing, I think the best word to describe it is historic, legendary,” the 24-time Grand Slam champion said.
“So congratulations, and I wish you the best of luck for the rest of your career.
“I mean, you’re so young, you have a lot of time, like myself,” he added. “I’m sure we’ll see each other many more times in the next 10 years!”
Alcaraz did not hold back in his adulation of the greatest tennis player in history as he showered encomium on the veteran.
“Obviously, first of all, I just wanted to talk about Novak. He deserves an ovation, for sure,” the now-seven-time major winner said.
“You’re talking about how I’m doing the amazing things, but what you’re doing is really inspiring, not only for the tennis players, but all the athletes and people around the world, and for me as well. Just putting the hard work every day with your team every tournament you go, and playing such great tennis, for me I just enjoy so much watching you playing. For me it’s been an honor to share the locker, share the court and watching you play.”
“Thank you very much for what you are doing. It’s very inspiring to me.” He concluded.
